By the time Luther Windy sauntered up the unpaved drive of the Wilton house the party was in full swing. On the porch he was greeted by loud phonograph music and the strong sent of flowering lilac and magnolia. The parlor windows had been thrown open and through the slightly billowing chintz curtains he could see a crowd of people watching Mr. Wilton and Ruby May dancing the Charleston.  People were smiling and clapping. Some the men had taken off their jackets and a few had even rolled up the sleeves of their starched white shirts.  The screen door stood slightly ajar and Luther stared at it stupidly, fanning himself with his hat, his jacket dangling over his right shoulder. He wondered whether he should put on his jacket before going in.  He decided that he should.  What would Ma say if she saw him without a jacket at a party?  He had just thrust his arm into one sleeve when the door unexpected flew open and Ernie Willows and Johnny Malone dashed out with two of the giggling Wilton girls, Esther and Sue.
